This fantastic set is composed of 9 flitches of special quality walnut crotches, sawn to a 8/4 thickness. The upper end of each consecutively cut flitch includes some of the finest crotch material available . The 9 pieces represent an entire set, and could be used together as a spectacular showcase of the repeated patterns and evolving changes the crotch figure undergoes as longitudinal sections are sliced from a log. In spite of the great possibilities of using the set intact, we are willing to sell the flitches individually. We can envision equally as satisfying projects using each flitch alone. This wood its too special to hoard in our stockroom....it deserves the opportunity to "show itself off" in your project!

We encouage you to take a closer look at the above photos to really appreciate this wood. The crotch end on the left is solid and shows off a vibrant "flame" figure, the flitch end on the right is beautiful straight grain containing interesting streaks that resulted from worm holes. All in all it this collection represents a beautiful grain mix.
Because we recognized the treasure hiding in this selection of wood, we gave it our best "kid glove" treatment. Prior to placing the material in the kiln, we coated the figured crotch area with a special thickness of wax. This extra care prevented the wood from drying out too quickly. We then moved the flitches through our slow, careful drying process, ensuring that there would be no surface checks on the figured areas.
The results are an example of what makes Horizon pride..... Perfection!

And to brag just a bit more about this collection, take a look at the dimensions. These pieces range up to an excess of 30+ inches in width. WOW!
Click on the Piece Number in the table to see the front and back faces of each flitch - The dark stain over the crotch figured areas is wax which protects the wild grain during the drying process. It is easily removed revealing the natural color of the wood as in the photographs above.
