For Horizon's first 'Item of the Month' in the new online inventory website we wanted to select a set which was very unique... but it was not an easy decision to make. There were a range of options to choose from; large and wide flitches, flitches with very unusual and attractive grain, crotch sets with imaculate flame figure.... in the end we settled on a beautiful set of 10/4" figured cherry.
This set is the best of all worlds, extra wide widths (+ 20"), super figure, perfectly clear wood, and extra thickness. The impressive 10/4" thickness enables this set to make impressive bar, table, or conference table tops or it could be resawn into a high quantity of thinner matching flitches all with great figure and no defects. This is a spectacular specimen with no cracks, knots, or bad growth rings.

What could have been... We have been showcasing some of our best selections on this on-line inventory. After awhile it seems everything we handle must be a gem. If only it were true!
Sometimes our hopes are dashed. Imagine the anticipation as we open up the
BIG 43" diameter (on the small end!) Black Walnut log..... perfectly clean on the outside.....
absolutely NO VISIBLE DEFECTS....
and find -
ROT !!!
at this point, an audible groan can be heard in the sawyers booth but....
all is not lost...
LOOK WHAT WE WERE ABLE TO SALVAGE!!!!!
a couple of beautifully clear, 8/4 - 33" flitches. Wonderful wood that outlasted the ants
and the rotten damage they created!
