Beautiful ... Subtle ... Butternut

Butternut, sometimes referred to as white walnut, is a member of the Walnut family. Like any good relative, it shares some characteristics from the family "tree". Butternut has the wonderful ability to finish off to a subtle, soft sheen, similar to that of its walnut cousins.

For the wood worker Butternut is noted for its great ability to be intricately carved. That coupled with its beautiful appearance, explains why it is often found created into spectacularly carved church doors and interior millwork. Butternut is very conducive to being worked with either power or hand tools. Ease of workability makes it a terrific woodworking choice.

Butternut grows randomly throughout the forest, and never in large quantities. Guess that's why we never really offered a lot...but we have been gradually growing our inventory and are now ready to show you what we have. Please take a look at our online inventory for even more selections.

Set 212785

Nice set of butternut with some wide widths. There are only a couple central defects in this set, in addition to some worm holes on the butt end of pieces 10 and 12, which have been discounted on the tally. Overall this is a great clear set of Butternut.

Set 212779

Beautiful wide set of Butternut boules. There is some scattered bird peck in this log which creates some dark streaks, but they look good with the light tan color of the grain. The set is complete with nice flatsawn pieces coming from either side of the log, the center flitches have been split to remove pitch and central defects. These center flitches have nice straight grain.

We are also presenting a lower grade of Rustic Butternut. It has the same great woodworking characteristics, but the tree's growth pattern developed

some less desirable features such as bends and knots.

Set 212897

The first half of this set has a knot near the center of the length which could be incorporated into a design, or split to make two shorter pieces. The other half of the log has a nice long clear section in each piece. There is a large knot on the top end of the flitches, but there is usable wood around the defect. There is quite a bit of beautiful butternut in this set!

Set 263084

This set of Butternut has a prominent natural curve which could be incorporated into the design of a piece of furniture. It contains a couple scattered knots and end checks. This set is included in the lower priced rustic collection due to the fact that pieces 5 through 8 are split and, with the curve in the set, it would have to be used in smaller dimensioned components.
