December 2009 - HUGE - WIDE - LONG - Sycamore #731 |
Sycamore, an interesting tree. It tends to grow in lowlands, often near riverbanks or lakes. The classic mottled look of the trunk makes it appear to be patterned with sunshine. This is actually due to the fact that the swift growth of the wood causes the bark to continuously slough off in thin plates and irregular patches. Take a look at what else our ITEM of the MONTH specimen of Sycamore was able to do.......grow to huge, beautiful proportions!! It is wide, it is long and it is spectacular! The heartwood of a sycamore this large often contains the fascinating fleck of the medullary rays if it is processed on equipment large enough to quartersaw it. You will see some fine examples of this feature in our selection.

Just to test the potential..... the Horizon lunch room became the stage for a magnificant Sycamore table, quickly and temporarily thrown together. Imagine the feast that could be served on this creation - over 12 feet long! Three super boards make up the entire top.
In reality, 2 of the wide book matched boards in this set could create a 60" X 12' top for one spectacularly large dining table or conference table!.

Amazing speck from the medullary rays... good Pizza too!! |

A nice addition to the lunch room. Gee, we sorta hate so see it go... |

To ease in the prep work for such a massive piece, we got the surfacing started by lightly planning/sanding both sides of each flitch. |

Its great width was almost too much for our 37” AMERICAN MADE Timesaver to handle... Barely fit! |

This set contains a whopping 538+ board feet of sequentially cut, matching Sycamore. A definate winner!
Because we hate to see this big a quantity of matching wood seperated, we would love to sell this selection intact. Offering very special pricing to the buyer of the entire colletion.... or we can divide the log and sell individual pieces.

There are some incredible widths in half of this log, the other half has been split to remove a straight check. The crack in the wide pieces could be joined together with a butterfly of contrasting wood for a unique effect. There are beautiful quartersawn pieces, and included with this set are a couple extra quartersawn and riftsawn pieces showing the fleck of the medullary rays. And for just a bit more added focus, the start of spalting towards one end adds a few interesting black spalt lines to this set.’ |
