Whan a tree grows and branches out to form what is commonly refered to as a crotch, all sorts of interesting changes go on beneath the bark. The cellular structure, under the stress of the bifurcation, becomes more complex and interwoven. What was once a straight shot now divides into two branches which must be supported by the trunk. The balance of the tree undergoes a gradual change, impacted by even the gentlest of breezes. It's not too hard to realize the accomodations the structure must go through to support this dynamic change. Once the tree is harvested and opened up, the work of nature becomes visible to our eyes.
In a vertically sliced tree crotch the pattern takes on some unique yet typical patterns. Close to the center of the tree, the crotch figure is at its finest in terms of intricacy. It is often referred to as "feather" or "flame". Moving farther out to the outer perimeter of the tree, the crotch material takes on a more wavey, loose, almost horizontal pattern. Still beautiful, but not as highly prized as the center cuts. There are many situations which can detract from the "perfection" of the crotch. Often ingrown bark or the knots created by other small limbs are visible in the crotch pattern.
With this understanding, it is easy to look at the photos and see why we are so proud to be able to present you with this spectacular Item of the Month!! Walnut crotch, CR759, is truly the "top of the line"! It has a lot going for it. The length of the flame is a fantastic four feet. The figure is amazingly arrow straight. There is absolutely no ingrown bark on the top surfaces and not a knot to be found!....Pieces 4 & 6 do have some ingrown bark on the back faces, its almost inevitable. The set contains 3 sequential pieces which could be bookmatched for an amazing project.
